Vital works of Cuban art were digitally recreated in 3d to bring them overseas, thanks to this mixed reality experience from Microsoft and the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO).
I served as the Art Director and sole artist on this project, recreating multiple pieces of existing works by one of Cuba’s most important artists, Sandú Darié, to the US for a 5 day Mixed Reality show exhibit at Art Basel Miami using Microsoft HoloLens and Samsung’s HMD Odyssey Windows Mixed Reality Headset.
The Photogrammetry process was complex and challenging for many of these sculptures, requiring them to be entirely rebuilt in 3d in order to re-project textures and massively cleaned up projection errors and lack of original photo information in order for the sculptures to be able to be viewed from all angles in Mixed Reality. This project had a very tight turnaround with only about 5 weeks from receiving the photography from Cuba in order to begin work on reconstruction, to the opening date of the exhibit in Miami.
I spoke about this project at Microsoft’s Build Conference, 2018.
